The Book Cover as a Medium of the Renaissance and Reformation. New Approaches to the Study of Pictorial Cover Design

The workshop will focus on pictorial binding design in the 16th and early 17th centuries. In an exchange with scholars from various disciplines, it will explore the potential of this field of research and look for new approaches. It is part of the library's activities focusing on the history of Protestantism.

Pilgrimages, educational journeys, expeditions, missions or trade: travelers made experiences of difference which they recorded, for example, in texts, pictures and maps. The interdisciplinary workshop will look at these works from a media and cultural-historical perspective and will draw on the large collection of travel literature at the Gotha Research Library.
