Lecture by Dr Sebastian Kubon (Munich) as part of the colloquium of the professorship for Medieval History of Vanina Kopp/Sabine Schmolinsky in cooperation with the Department of History

The Middle Ages are (once again) en vogue - perhaps less in educational institutions, but all the more so in popular culture and among extremists of all stripes in the USA, UK, France and, more recently, increasingly in Germany. Right-wing extremists in particular construct a place of longing here and hope for its "rebirth". In addition to traditional media such as books - where the theoretical foundations can usually be found - and journals, various media and platforms on the internet (social media accounts, social news aggregators or BitChute as well as podcasts) also play a major role in the dissemination of such an image. In addition to various examples of the reception of the Middle Ages or the 'use of the Middle Ages' by right-wing extremists, the main aim is to systematically ask which aspects of an imagined Middle Ages are attractive and why.
