Brandt School alumna Dr. Heather Mikulski delivers guest lecture on AI and digital health to MPP students

Dr. Heather Mikulski shared her insights on digital health technologies, AI applications in healthcare, and the policy challenges shaping the future of public sector innovation.

From remote diagnostics to algorithm-driven treatment plans, artificial intelligence is playing an increasingly influential role in modern healthcare. These advancements are not only transforming clinical practice but also prompting urgent policy debates about data ethics, data privacy, regulation, and equitable access. As digital health technologies continue to evolve, understanding their societal and policy implications has become a vital area of inquiry for future public policy professionals.

To explore these themes, the Head of Digital Policy and Artificial Intelligence, Dr. Hasnain Bokhari invited Brandt School’s Alumna Dr. Heather Mikulski on May 19, 2025 for a guest lecture to discuss the intersection of digital health and public policy. The talk was organised as part of the graduate course, AI and Public Policy.

Dr. Mikulski’s lecture focused on three interconnected areas: the evolution of digital health technologies, the role of AI in healthcare, and the broader public policy implications of these innovations. She referred to the scope of digital health, highlighting tools such as electronic health records, wearable monitoring devices, and telemedicine platforms that are reshaping healthcare delivery.

A central part of the lecture examined how AI is being deployed in the health industry. Dr. Mikulski discussed how algorithms and machine learning models can be used to detect patterns in clinical data, support decision-making, and personalise treatments. She shared examples ranging from AI-enabled diagnostic tools to predictive models in the health sector, showcasing how these technologies are accelerating innovation across the sector.

Dr. Mikulski emphasised the need for regulatory frameworks that can evolve alongside rapid technological change. Drawing on her international experience, she underscored the importance of balancing innovation with responsible governance, data protection, and inclusive digital infrastructure. In this insightful and highly interactive session, students engaged in reflective discussions and hands-on activities that encouraged them to grapple with the societal impacts of AI in health.
