FAQ - Bachelor's thesis

1. how to write the bachelor's thesis?

The bachelor's thesis (B thesis) is a written or artistic-practical paper that is usually to be written in the final year of study.

However, the registration of the bachelor's thesis should be discussed in advance with the respective examiner/supervisor. For details on the examiner/supervisor, see 4.

2. in which field of study do I have to write my bachelor's thesis and do I have to register it?

The bachelor's thesis is written in the module "Bachelor's Thesis". Students have to choose a topic for their bachelor's thesis from the area of their major or a cross-disciplinary topic with a focus in their major.

A topic can be freely chosen or will be given by the supervisor.

In exceptional cases, an external supervisor can also help supervise the bachelor's thesis, but this must be agreed upon in advance with the respective in-house supervisor.

The issue of the topic of the bachelor's thesis takes place in a bachelor's thesis module of the major upon application (see 8.) to the module examiner (examiner).

In view of the large number of BA theses and the required occupancy, a supervisor should already be arranged in an earlier semester. Therefore, contact your desired examiner early and observe any deadlines of the subject area.

Students of International Relations please note the information on the website.

3. what is the scope of a bachelor's thesis and how long do I have?

As a rule, the length of the paper should not exceed approx. 10,000 words.

The chosen topic should be of such a scope that the deadline for processing of approx. 7½ weeks can be met.

4. who can supervise my bachelor's thesis?

The bachelor thesis module is supervised and examined by a lecturer from the major field of study.

It is also possible to write BA theses only with lecturers who offer a corresponding module in the semester that can be taken.

The Faculty Council appoints the module examiners each semester by means of the designation of the module examinations in the course catalogue. In all other respects, the examination board is responsible for appointing the examiners and assessors.

5. what do I do if my bachelor's thesis was graded "not sufficient"?

If the bachelor's thesis is assessed as "insufficient", the examiner shall set a deadline within which the bachelor's thesis can be reworked. In addition to the appointed examiner, the reworked thesis must also be evaluated by a second examiner who is proposed by the first examiner and appointed by the chairman of the examination board.

If the final grade of the bachelor's thesis is "not sufficient", a second bachelor's thesis can be written once in the next semester.

6. where do I turn to if the supervisor of my BA thesis is ill?

In this case, please contact the BA examination board. This will then discuss in each individual case how much influence this has on your continuation of the BA - work. If necessary, you will be granted a postponement.

7. what do I do if I fall ill during this time?

In this case, the processing time will be extended by the period of illness if proof of illness is available.

This is done automatically after submitting the proof of illness to SUL and the Deanery. After processing, you will receive a document with the respective new submission date.
