Do I have to take English and American Studies if I want to learn English?

Do I have to take English and American Studies if I want to learn English?

That is only partly true. In the course of the BA programme Anglistik/Amerikanistik, students do take advanced language classes, in order to obtain a fluent and stylistically appropriate use of English. However, a very good command of English (at least B2 level) is expected from any prospective student.

No. At the beginning of their course, all students must take a placement test (Oxford Placement test), where their proficiency in English is evaluated. Depending on their result, some classes can only be attended at a later point in their studies. Regular students of the BA Anglistik/Amerikanistik programme, need to reach 65 points in order to be admitted to the module examination at the end of their first year. Students with results below that mark are given the chance to resit the test on 15 January each year.

The Anglistik/Amerikanistik programme at the University of Erfurt finishes with a Bachelor of Arts. This is an internationally recognised degree that allows to persue further studies at any university. Also the University of Erfurt offers several suitable master programmes.

A university course is a fulltime job and an enormous expenditure of time that needs to be mastered. However, the University of Erfurt is very family-friendly. There is, for instance, a dedicated kindergarten on campus.

Yes, it is generally possible to study Anglistik/Amerikanistik in part-time. For this, students need to apply at Studium und Lehre. However, the allocation of BAföG is not possible then.

I have already studied English at another university. Can my credits be recognised?

Insofar your acquired credits correspond in content and extent to the part of a module, the credits may be recognised. The current Subject Commissioner should be consulted for the recognition of credits.

Recognitions

The Subject Commissioner (Studienrichtungsbeauftragte) is responsible for the recognition of national and international academic achievements.

In order to have their classes validated, students need to download and fill out the form provided by Studium und Lehre. This needs to be presented together with the respective records of achievement (certificate with title of class, name of teacher, credits and grade as well as module allocation).

For a BA in Anglistik/Amerikanistik from the University of Erfurt, a minimum of 60 credits needs to be obtained at Erfurt, including a minimum of 30 credits in the major subject.

Admission

For admission to English and American Studies, do not send your application to the faculty, but use the central application of the university. Admission opens 1 June each year and is online.

Begin of study is always in the autumn/fall term. You can study English and American Studies as a major or minor subject and combine it with any other BA programme except Literary Studies.

  • If you studied English and American Studies at another university already, use the regular application process and get individual modules recognised.
  • You can take a certificate course if you already possess a university degree. The workload equals that of a minor subject.
