Work programme

  • Detailed exposé
In the first semester, an outline of the theoretical foundation and methodological realisation of the dissertation is created. This exposé serves as a basis for reflection and for discussions with the supervisor.

  • Dissertation
From the 2nd to the 6th semester, the focus is on working on your own research project and writing your dissertation. The results are regularly presented for discussion at events organised by the programme and, where possible, at international conferences. Attendance at other events organised by the programme deepens academic expertise and strengthens further skills for your personal career path.

  • Final presentation
Towards the end of the writing phase, there are final presentations that lead to feedback from the doctoral students and suggestions for revision. The dissertation is then submitted and assessed.

In accordance with the doctorate-degree regulations of the participating faculties, the thesis must be defended in an oral defence open to the university public. The doctoral procedure is concluded with the publication of the thesis.

Events

The graduate centre offers doctoral students and postdocs a programme of events and other opportunities to acquire specific academic skills. We expect regular participation in events such as colloquia, lectures and workshops. Project progress must be presented to colleagues at least once a year, usually once a semester. Participation in at least two further events per semester is expected. The events are entered in a calendar accessible to all members.

  • Project day
Each semester, a one-day internal workshop is held in which fellows present their research work and put it up for discussion.

  • Master classes and summer schools
The Centre regularly offers master classes and summer schools in which experienced international researchers work together with the fellows on a specific topic. The fellows have a say in the selection of guests.

  • Colloquia, thematic workshops and conferences
The fellows are invited to actively participate in colloquia, workshops and conferences that take place in the context of the supervisors' research. In addition, fellows are supported in initiating and preparing such events themselves. In this context, it is also possible to gain initial experience in academic publishing.

  • Writing retreats
If required, writing retreats can be organised for the fellows. These enable doctoral students to engage intensively with writing and to find peace, productivity, inspiration and exchange about their writing processes.
