Research project
The "true islam" and his followers: audiovisual (re-)presentations of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat on Social Media
In her research, Jasmin Eder analyses the presence of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat on social media, in particular on YouTube, Instagram and TikTok. The analysis focuses on both the content disseminated by the media and the relevance and use of social media within the community. Of particular interest is which thematic focuses are important to members and how these are negotiated by selected creators on the respective platforms. In addition, the perspective of the users is also taken into account: Guided interviews are used to determine which content is perceived as particularly appealing and which platforms are preferred. The importance of audiovisual elements - such as images, video sequences and sounds - for the design and reception of religious content plays a central role.
The aim of the study is to work out how religious, theological and socially relevant topics with a religious reference are presented, negotiated and perceived by users on social media. The focus is on the question of the function and effect of audiovisual forms of expression both in the process of production and in the context of the reception of religious content on digital platforms.
