What’s this book about?
This is the first edited volume that focuses on second language pragmatics and young language learners in primary schools in European contexts. While second language pragmatics (sometimes also called interlanguage pragmatics) has been investigated for more than 40 years now, to date only a limited number of studies have focused on how children learning English as a foreign language (EFL) can be taught to communicate appropriately, politely and effectively in EFL classrooms. The book contains 9 studies from six different European countries (Croatia, Cyprus, Germany, Norway, Spain and the Netherlands) written by 13 researchers.
The studies focus on
- young EFL learners' pragmatic performance, awareness and development,
- learners' and teachers' views on pragmatic instruction,
- material use and lesson planning.
The studies feature a range of data sources, such as animated films, arts-based instruction, classroom discourse, interviews, narrated picture-based tasks, and questionnaires.
