Electronic laboratory notebooks (ELNs) have become indispensable tools in modern research and significantly influence how data and metadata are documented, managed and shared throughout the research data lifecycle. By capturing metadata in a structured, standardised and consistent way from the start of data generation, ELNs significantly improve the quality of metadata. Their digital nature not only facilitates data preservation and collaboration, but also enables new connections between datasets to be recognised, which promotes the reuse of data.
In cooperation with the Thuringian Competence Network for Research Data Management (TKFDM) and the Competence Centre for Digital Research (Zedif), the IT Centre of Thuringian Universities (HS-ITZ) operates a joint instance of the generic ELN eLabFTW, which can be used by research groups from Thuringian universities and universities of applied sciences. In this Coffee Lecture, the TKFDM data stewards will give a brief introduction to research documentation with eLabFTW and explain how interested Thuringian universities and universities of applied sciences can gain institutional access to the HS-ITZ instance.
