Medieval surgery textbook at the City Museum

From Monday 25 August, we will be exhibiting a new manuscript in the Amploniana display case at the City Museum: Guy de Chauliac’s textbook on surgery

… a famous 14th-century French physician – which was copied time and again right up to modern times and was used in teaching at the University of Erfurt, amongst other places. Until the end of August, we are exhibiting the masterfully decorated title page, followed for six weeks by an initial letter in rich opaque colours, which have lost none of their vibrancy in the 600 years since they were created. This textbook also reveals just how terrifying the surgical instruments used back then were.

You are welcome to view the original of this precious parchment manuscript from the first third of the 15th century:
‘Haus zum Stockfisch’, Johannesstraße 169
, Tuesday to Sunday, 10.00–18.00.
