This is the first anthology to deal with second language pragmatics and young language learners in European primary schools. While second language pragmatics has been researched for more than 40 years, only a limited number of studies have focused on how children learning English as a foreign language in primary school can be taught to communicate appropriately, politely and effectively in the foreign language.

The book contains nine studies from six different European countries (Germany, Croatia, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain and Cyprus), written by 13 researchers.

The studies focus on:

  • learners' productive and receptive pragmatic skills;
  • pragmatic development;
  • learners' and teachers' views on pragmatic teaching aspects;
  • material use and lesson planning.

The studies include a range of data sources, such as animated films, art-based lessons, classroom discourse, interviews, narrated picture-based tasks and questionnaires.

The editors:

  • Gila Schauer is Professor of Applied Linguistics with a focus on English at the University of Erfurt.
  • Maria Economidou-Kogetsidis is Professor of English and Applied Linguistics at the University of Nicosia in Cyprus.
  • Milica Savić is Professor of English and Applied Linguistics at the University of Stavanger in Norway.
  • Anders Myrset is Associate Professor of English Language Teaching Methodology at the University of Stavanger in Norway.
