- Please note: Based on many years of experience, we recommend early application! The earlier you apply, the earlier you will receive notifications from us. With an early application, it is still possible to start your studies on time in October, despite longer visa processes. For better orientation, we have compiled an overview of ideal application times here.
- Applications are processed on an ongoing basis and the time of submission has no influence on the success of your application.
- Please understand that we cannot answer individual questions about your eligibility or specific certificates prior to your officially submitted application, which we will review in detail as part of the application process. Therefore, please use the FAQs we have compiled for any uncertainties (see below).

Admission Requirements
All applicants must pass a selection procedure before their eligibility for admission can be confirmed. The prerequisites for admission to the program are:
- a relevant bachelor's degree in the area of media and communication studies or journalism studies or another related social science degree program with proven communication and media science specializations
- prior knowledge of empirical methods (12 ECTS)
- very good English proficiency: TOEFL iBT: 80 or above, IELTS 6.5 or above; C1 (GER); equally accepted standards are a Bachelor degree in an English language program or 6 months of English language higher education experience in an English speaking country
- successful participation in the selection procedure, which includes a personal interview.
- Information about German language proficiency for students from abroad: German language proficiency is not required for admission. However, we recommend that students who are unable to speak the German language should study German before or during their studies so that they can benefit from additional events or courses at the University. Furthermore, basic German skills facilitate living in Germany. German courses can be taken at the Language Center of the University of Erfurt.
Application Procedure and Selection Interviews
After reviewing your documents, we will invite suitable applicants to a personal selection interview. All applicants who are not invited for an interview will receive a rejection letter via the application portal.
Invitations are also created via the application portal and should be confirmed quickly by the applicants. As a rule, all invitees receive an additional email notification, but due to spam settings, we recommend that you check the portal regularly.
The interviews will be conducted on a rolling basis and we will try to send out notifications about the results in a timely manner. Due to the varying volume of applications, waiting times for feedback on applications may vary slightly. For applications that reach us only towards the end of the application period, invitations for the subsequent interviews in July/August can only be issued in short-term. All interviews will be conducted online via Webex.
The selection interview takes about 15 minutes and is conducted in English. Your letter of motivation serves as the basis for the interview and is therefore of particular importance! During the interview, your
- communication skills and ability to assess your own strengths and weeknesses,
- your ability to reason and argumentation scientifically and comprehend academic problems,
- your international and intercultural compretence, experience and interest and
- your academic motivation to study this master's program
is evaluated.
In the selection process, both the selection interview and the final Bachelor's grade are equally weighted. You can achieve a maximum of 40 points in the interview. The final Bachelor's grade is also converted into points. You can achieve the maximum number of 40 points with a grade of 1.0. One point less is awarded for each 0.1 gradation in the grade. If your Bachelor's degree grade is not yet available at the time of application, the grade you need to be admitted will be determined by evaluating the selection interview. You have successfully passed the selection process if you have received at least 60 out of a possible 80 points.
