Forschungsprojekt

The Nāṭyaśāstra is a treatise on dance, theatre and dramaturgy in ancient India. Eight of the so-called 'classical Indian dances' still refer to this treatise. Although these dance styles originate from different regions of India, they are performed interculturally and transnationally based on the Nāṭyaśāstra due to migration. The sixth chapter of the Nāṭyaśāstra focuses on 'rasa' (emotions) and is central to the text rather call the heart of this treatise. The term 'rasa' is used to describe the feelings experienced by the audience during a performance. It refers to the emotional essence or flavour of a performance and evokes deep, indescribable feelings in the audience. The remaining chapters refer to Chapter 6 while describing the framework conditions and prerequisites for successful performance.

The holistic approach and profound knowledge of psychology and spirituality in this multidisciplinary, seemingly encyclopaedic work are best appreciated through an interpretive reading that considers the cross-references within the 36 chapters rather than through a 'word-for-word translation'.

Analysing the references to the guiding principles of psychology and spirituality will reveal the holistic approach of the Nāṭyaśāstra and make it more applicable to the present day. The aim is for the following questions to be analysed.

  • Which chapters of the Nāṭyaśāstra deal directly with the psyche, or with defining mental states?
  • What is the overall effect of the different chapters of the work, and are they linked to each other or do they stand on their own?

When we consider the holistic approach of the Nāṭyaśāstra, the following questions arise for the present time:

  • Is the social and cultural context of the Nāṭyaśāstra transferable to Western or modern psychology? Is there any possibility of comparison?
  • Can Western analytical methods be applied, or is the interpretation of the content subject to a purely Indian tradition, as reflected in indigenous psychology, for example?
