Postcard from Texas

Greetings from Texas! I spent one semester at the University of Texas at Austin where I studied at the Moody College of Communication. I had an amazing time, both academically and personally and can only recommend to take the step of going abroad. UT Austin has one of the best communication departments in the world and the University in general has a great reputation. My classes really confirmed this for me - the lecturers are focused on making the seminars a great learning experience. I e.g. took the film class "Contemporary Global Cinemas" and a class on Social Movement communication that offered me truly new perspectives and approaches which greatly complimented what I have learned in Erfurt and which I will take with me into my MA thesis back in Germany. Apart from the university, the exchange gave me the opportunity to get to know the American way of life, to travel and to dive into Texas culture: Cowboy boots and all. Like they say at UT: Hook 'em!

Cristhian ... in Madrid, Spain

During my time at the Faculty of Information Science at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid, I discussed with my classmates and wrote papers about migration, propaganda, and populism, the topics I chose for my elective seminars in the Master's Global Communication: Politics and Society in Erfurt. War and political communication were also very present in class, especially because of the inspiring compromise to peace activism throughout the campus, mobilizing students through flyers and WhastApp groups. It was very productive to hear some feedback from the Spanish perspective on the preliminary findings of my master thesis. It was also a privilege to use the digital resources that Universidad Complutense offers and find many academic articles for my theoretical framework that would expand the bibliography with references in three languages. The city’s public library system is remarkable, with cero costs for subscription and with extended hours during exams period. For that, and for the opportunity that the Erasmus+ program gave me to discover a vibrant academic community, I will always be grateful.

Neringa ... in Taipeh, Taiwan

„你好 (Nǐ hǎo) from Taiwan! I arrived here 4 weeks ago and was overwhelmed by the city of Taipei and its rich and diverse culture and history. I am currently enrolled as an exchange student at National Chengchi University at the College of Communication, where I am attending the International Master's Program in International Communication Studies (IMICS). I was already able to discover many parallels to the MA program Global Communication back in Erfurt! The two courses I am attending for my exchange semester are „Popular culture in Taiwan“ and „Globalization and Transnationalism“ - with a focus on Chinese diaspora. Moreover, I am taking a Mandarin language course which is very challenging, but at the same time very rewarding. The lecturers at Chengchi University seem very ambitious and engaged, which is why I am enjoying my stay a lot!“

Lea ... in Tartu, Estonia

"Tere! - Or 'Hi' from Estonia. I’m currently studying for one semester at Tartu University, which is one of the oldest universities in Europe. And it’s not just about the impressive buildings here. The courses I am taking are very interesting, such as Political Culture, Civil Society or History of the Baltic Sea Region. Just like in Erfurt, the courses follow a comparative approach - with a special focus on the development of post-communist countries. The course "Contemporary Media and New Publics" deals with the influence of the internet on media in general, but also focuses on how it changes publics and discourses within society. In a groupwork, we analyse the „new public sphere“ of the social movement "Fridays for Future" on Facebook and how they communicate. But I also learned many more useful things like: never, ever forget your umbrella. Or: No matter how hard you study (and you have to write a lot of papers here), you’ll never be as good as the internet-connection even on the countryside (true!). And the landscape is incredibly beautiful, especially in autumn!"

Julia ... in Seoul, Südkorea

My semester abroad at Yonsei University in Seoul was a great experience. Seoul is an exciting and vibrant city and is very easy to navigate, also as a foreigners who doesn’t speak Korean. Yonsei University has a beautiful campus and well organised exchange program. I feel more than happy to have had the opportunity to live in such a different, interesting and beautiful country and to get to know the Korean culture and society better
