New publication: Römische Geschichtsschreibung. Einführung in das historische Erzählen

For both Classical Philology and Ancient History, ancient historiography offers the most direct access to the world and history of Rome. Sallust, Livy and Cassius Dio have served as sources for our understanding of Rome and the Roman Empire for almost two millennia. This introduction examines the persuasive power of these historical narratives and describes the forms and development of historical documentation and representation. Through vivid illustrations and memorable examples, it examines both the techniques and strategies employed in the texts and the cultural and historical contexts of their authors. Jörg Rüpke explores both the historical source material and approaches from Literary Studies to these texts.

New release: Russian translation as an open-access edition

The introduction has now also been published in Russian and is therefore already available in four languages: German, English, Romanian and Russian. The translation was carried out by Liudmila Rusinova, a PhD candidate at the Max-Weber-Kolleg and the Faculty of Philosophy at the University of Erfurt, and is available worldwide as a free open-access book via the Thuringian Digital Library. Particularly in view of Russia’s increasing isolation, this edition is intended to reach Russian-speaking researchers, lecturers and students directly.
