This volume brings together fundamental contributions on the Christian faith in secular culture. By presenting a thoughtful analysis of the Christian faith in the contemporary context, it addresses key challenges facing the Church and society. Building on reflections on the Christian understanding of the human person in the face of widespread functionalism, it demonstrates the religious, social and political relevance of Christianity as a religion of education. Education, understood in a Christian sense, aims at freedom, responsibility and a fruitful life in communion with God. These reflections are elaborated with regard to the mission and profile of Catholic educational institutions, the significance of theology in the Church and society, and the potential of religious education. At the same time, key dimensions of lived faith in a secular world – monastic culture, the relationship between faith and doubt, and the question of the human appointment – are explored in all their existential depth. The result is a nuanced panorama that offers guidance and invites a renewed understanding of the Christian appointment of the human person in late modernity.
