Language development disorders are among the most common developmental disorders in childhood. Nevertheless, they remain relatively unknown amongst the general public and often go undetected. However, long-term, severe language difficulties can have a significant impact on the educational and career development, as well as the social participation, of children, adolescents and young adults. To raise awareness amongst the general public about children’s language acquisition and its disorders, once a year in October, dedicated therapists, doctors, teachers, nursery staff, researchers, those affected and their families, as well as other supporters, draw attention to the issue through a wide variety of activities. The University of Erfurt is once again taking part this year.
The 10th International Day of Language Development Disorders will take place on Friday, 16 October 2026, under the motto “Together for DLD”. Employees from the “Kompass Sprache” Teaching and Research Lab at the University of Erfurt will be on hand at a central event on Domplatz to answer questions from those affected, parents, educators and anyone else interested, and to provide information about language development disorders.
This campaign was launched by a team of researchers and therapists from England (the RADLD organisation), where DLD Awareness Day has been celebrated annually since 2017. However, the campaign has long since expanded beyond the UK and is now widely embraced internationally.
