Storytelling café: Stories of love, friendships and families of and migrants in the GDR

Information from the organisers

When people talk about the GDR today, they rarely talk about migrants. And if it is, then perhaps about their jobs and sometimes also about negative experiences that were made in the GDR.

We would like to start a conversation about interpersonal relationships - which always arise when people work together or live together in one place: Friendships, romantic relationships, partnerships, marriages, families.

That's why we are looking for people

• who had romantic relationships or friendships with migrants in the GDR,

• who themselves or whose parents migrated to the GDR before 1989

• and who would like to talk about these experiences.

In spring 2026, we are organising several "storytelling cafés" in Thuringia, where we can talk, share and listen together in an intimate and cosy atmosphere over coffee and biscuits. tell, share and listen together and listen. Because we think that these experiences and stories are worth telling and listening to!

All interested parties are cordially invited, and we are particularly happy to welcome participants who meet one of the above criteria.
