Changeover of malware protection at the University of Erfurt

The University Computer and Media Center (URMZ) would like to inform you that the University of Erfurt is switching its malware protection from "Sophos Endpoint Protection" to "Microsoft Defender for Endpoint". The change is part of a Thuringia-wide project of the HS-ITZ network and affects all official computers.

The background to this is that the existing Sophos contract expires on 28 February 2026 and Microsoft Defender is already included in the Microsoft 365 A3 licences and offers comprehensive protection against malware, ransomware and cyber threats. The switch also enables better utilisation of existing resources and consolidation of the IT security infrastructure.

The changeover will take place gradually over the next few weeks – centrally managed Windows devices will be converted automatically. For users, this means that they must connect all their devices (including those rarely used) to the network by 28 February to ensure a smooth transition. During normal use, Windows updates will be installed and software distributions will run. For occasional use or when travelling, software distributions should be initiated (via eduVPN).

Please note: Software distribution is only possible in the university network or via an active eduVPN connection.
