Committed instead of powerless – strategies for democratic resilience

Professor Thorsten Thiel (Chair of Democracy Promotion and Digital Policy) and Dr Hannah Vermaßen (Associate at the Chair of Political Theory) are hosting a public panel discussion entitled "Engagiert statt ohnmächtig – Strategien für demokratische Resilienz" (Committed instead of powerless – strategies for democratic resilience) on Tuesday, 20 January on the campus of the University of Erfurt. The event will begin at 6 p.m. in Lecture Hall 2 of the Communication and Information Centre (KIZ). Admission is free.

In view of the strengthening of authoritarian populist movements, an increasing loss of trust in democratic institutions and the growing polarisation of public discourse, the question of the resilience of democracy in Thuringia, Germany and globally is increasingly coming into focus. The panel discussion in January will provide an opportunity to learn about different perspectives and ideas on how we can better organise and protect our democracy. Three personalities who have decisively shaped the discussion on resilient democracy in recent years will be taking part in the panel discussion: Katrin Göring-Eckardt, member of the German “Bundestag” for the Bündnis 90/Die Grünen party since 1998 – former Vice President of the “Bundestag” and one of the best-known voices for democracy from Thuringia; Max Steinbeis, founder of the “Verfassungsblog”, initiator of its Thuringia project and author of the book "Die verwundbare Demokratie" (Vulnerable Democracy); and Franziska Wittau, head of the “Landeszentrale für politische Bildung” (State Centre for Political Education in Thuringia).
