Honorary doctorate from the Ecole Normale Supérieure Lyon for Professor Hartmut Rosa

The Ecole Normale Supérieure Lyon, one of the most prestigious universities in France, will award Professor Hartmut Rosa, Director of the Max-Weber-Kolleg at the University of Erfurt, an honorary doctorate at an international conference entitled "Acceleration, Alienation and Resonance: Forms of Connecting with the World" on 15 December 2025 in Lyon.

The award recognises his ground-breaking contributions to sociology, in particular his pioneering research into the phenomenon of acceleration in modern society and his phenomenological-critical analysis of world relations. With his concept of "resonance", Hartmut Rosa has developed a new perspective for social theory that goes beyond traditional models and focuses on the human capacity for deep, authentic connection with the world. His work has not only had a decisive influence on academic debate in Germany and Europe, but has also had a broad international impact and provided new impetus beyond the social sciences.

The Ecole Normale Supérieure Lyon honours Professor Rosa as an outstanding scholar who, with his interdisciplinary approach, his critical intelligence and his ability to make complex social phenomena accessible, has enriched the academic and social debate in a lasting way.

Jörg Rüpke, Co-Director of the Max Weber-Kolleg at the University of Erfurt: "We are delighted to receive this further international award, which rightly recognises Hartmut Rosa's work and contributes to the visibility of research on world relations at the Max Weber-Kolleg."
