On 18 June 2025, the German Ethics Council will host its annual conference in Berlin. Under the title “Successful Solidarity”, scholars, political decision-makers, and civil society actors will discuss the conditions under which solidarity can succeed in an increasingly polarised society shaped by global crises.
Psychologist and director of the Institute for Planetary Health Behaviour (IPB), Prof. Dr. Cornelia Betsch, is a member of the Council’s preparatory working group and will take part in the event. She emphasizes:
“At the individual level, we must ask: What motivates people to act in solidarity – and what prevents them from doing so? We will explore the role of trust and how social media and digital platforms influence solidarity.”
The conference will address questions such as: What responsibilities do different generations have toward one another? How can solidarity be promoted in urban planning or the healthcare system? And how can it be fostered in a diverse migration society – not only living side by side, but truly living together?
A supporting programme featuring artistic contributions and an interactive exhibition of volunteer initiatives will offer tangible insights into solidarity beyond academic discussion.
The event is free of charge and open to the public. Registration is required for in-person attendance. The conference will also be livestreamed online.
