Chapter on the "figure of the female consumer" published in the anthology "Precarious Consumption"

In the anthology "Precarious Consumption" by Maximilian Bergengruen and Elisabeth Weiß-Sinn, Bernhard Kleeberg addresses the topic of "The figure of the consumer. The psychology and practice of early advertising".

Consumption and precarity proved to be closely intertwined cultural, social and aesthetic dynamics in the long 19th century. From Literary Studies, sociological and (economic) historical perspectives, the contributions analyse how precarious consumption practices structure social distinction, destabilise gender orders and create new forms of economic insecurity. They show how literary texts model these tensions narratively, expose theoretical blind spots in the economy and aesthetically test precarious scopes of action.
