Mourning for Ute Winter

The University of Erfurt mourns the loss of Ute Winter, who passed away on 16 November at the age of 63. We have lost a loving person, a valued colleague and a committed campaigner for the University of Erfurt.

Ute Winter began her career at the University of Erfurt in 1997, initially in the University Library. As an experienced cataloguer, she was respected not only by her immediate circle of colleagues. Always open to technical innovations, Ute Winter was a constant source of innovation and ideas during her employment. One of her many achievements was the establishment of the Electronic Text Centre at the University of Erfurt. She also played a key role in the design of the Digital Library of Thuringia. As a sought-after expert, she spoke at congresses and specialist conferences. Her main concern was the exchange and sharing of knowledge within the specialised world. She was appreciated for this far beyond the borders of Thuringia. At the same time, she and a dedicated team were responsible for the introduction and development of the new website based on TYPO3. It was also against this background that Ute Winter moved to the University Computer and Media Center (URMZ) in 2010 and, as a member of the TYPO3 team, provided the employees with advice and support.

Ute Winter's work in the area of data protection was also a major achievement. Starting in 2016 as deputy data protection officer, she assumed full responsibility for this area in 2018. Here, too, her work was characterised by a high level of expertise and commitment. Ute Winter has achieved a great deal with her commitment in the field of data protection at the University of Erfurt and has continuously and successfully met the growing demands in this area. She was also well networked nationwide outside the University of Erfurt and was actively involved in the field of data protection.

As a member of the University of Erfurt Senate between 2019 and 2022, Ute Winter represented the interests and concerns of employees in technology and administration. As a senator, it was important to her to protect and assert the interests of her group on the committee.

Ute Winter leaves a painful gap. We will miss her and will always honour her memory. Our sympathy goes out to her family.
