On the way to the FISU World University Games: Flame makes a stop in Erfurt

This summer, the world will come together in Germany to celebrate sport, science and culture – at one of the largest multi-sport events in the world in 2025. The Ruhr region will host the FISU World University Games. Around 8,500 top student athletes from up to 150 countries are expected to take part from 16 to 27 July. A student from the University of Erfurt has also been nominated for the squad: Marlene Körner is studying to become a teaching profession and wants to compete in the 100 metre sprint. Similar to the Olympic Games, a flame relay through Germany is intended to publicise the mega-event in the summer. The flame was lit in Turin in January and will now make a stop in Erfurt on its way to the Rhine-Ruhr region on 24 April.

"We are very pleased that we not only have a student in the perspective squad, but that we can also be part of the torch relay," says Jens Panse, employee of the University Health Management and President of the Erfurt University Sports Club, who has taken over the overall management of the flame relay in Erfurt. The flame will be passed every 300 metres along the approximately six-kilometre route. Each university will provide two to three flame runners for the short stages as well as accompanying runners who will complete the entire route.

On behalf of the University of Erfurt, Professor Beate Hampe (Vice President for International Affairs), Marlene Körner and Hubert Hager will be running the flame relay on 24 April. Hager is also a student at the University of Erfurt, a wheelchair basketball player for the Thuringia Bulls and part of the Austrian national team. He is also hoping to take part in the FISU World University Games this summer – but then with the Austrian national wheelchair basketball team. The Lord Mayor of Erfurt, Andreas Horn, will be taking part in the flame relay for the City of Erfurt, and Professor Robert Patejdl (Vice-Rector for Studies and Teaching) will be running for the Health Medical University (HMU). Mia Stauß (student, Schwarz-Weiß Erfurt SWE Volleyteam, 1st “Bundesliga”) and Konstantin Krauße (former successful long jumper and now lecturer in sports management) will carry the flame for the International University of Cooperative Education (iba). Roman Freitag, the German university cross-country champion, represents the University of Applied Sciences Erfurt (he is a student of civil engineering). The University Sports Club Erfurt will be represented by its President Jens Panse and Sabine Gleisberg, multiple German karate champion. Marcel Bräutigam, the fastest police officer in Germany, who won the “Rennsteig-Super-Marathon” last year, will also carry the flame for a stage.

The runners will start at 4 pm in front of the library on the University of Erfurt campus in the direction of the town hall, where Lord Mayor Andreas Horn will also join the flame relay team at 4.30 pm. A photo opportunity is also planned here, to which representatives of the press are cordially invited. The route continues to HMU at “Anger”, iba, IU and Erfurt University of Applied Sciences. After the flame arrives at the University of Applied Sciences, there will be a runners' party with all participants at around 6 p.m., which will bring the event to a close.
