Panel on Climate Journalism at the CORRECTIV.Lokal Conference 2025 in Erfurt

In May 2025, the CORRECTIV.Lokal Conference will take place at the University of Erfurt. Sarah Pelull from the Institute for Planetary Health Behaviour has been invited to join a panel on climate journalism.

On May 10 and 11, 2025, CORRECTIV, in collaboration with the Thuringian State Media Authority and other partners, will host the third CORRECTIV.Lokal Conference at the University of Erfurt. The event will bring together approximately 300 journalists, media professionals, scientists, civil society actors, and politicians to discuss the future of local journalism in a democratic society.

Sarah Pelull, project coordinator in the HEATCOM research project at the Institute for Planetary Health Behaviour, will participate in the panel discussion "Ask us anything: Climate Journalism in Times of Rising CO₂ Prices" on Sunday, May 11, 2025, from 1:30 to 2:30 PM. The event will take place in Room 03.07 in Lecture Building LG4 (C18) at the University of Erfurt.

The panel will address the challenges associated with the increase in CO₂ prices under the European Emissions Trading System starting in 2027, as well as their societal and communicative dimensions. The focus will be on how to communicate socially just climate policies—especially in a political environment characterized by uncertainty and transformational pressure.

Other panel participants include:

  • Silvio Wenzel, Climate Editor, Science Media Center

  • Laura Wahl, Parliamentary Group Chair, BÜNDNIS 90/DIE GRÜNEN in the Erfurt City Council

  • Astrid Schaffert, Advisor, Zukunft KlimaSozial

"Ask us anything" is an interactive format designed to engage the audience through direct questions to and from the panelists.

Prof. Dr. Leyla Dogruel, IPB board member and co-organizer of the conference, states:

I am interested in the contribution local media can make to conveying and negotiating global issues like climate change, and the role local journalism plays in addressing the climate crisis on the ground.
