Professor Bauer-Wabnegg continues to lead the University of Erfurt as interim president

As negotiations with the candidate elected to the post of the new President of the University of Erfurt unfortunately could not be brought to a successful conclusion, the University Assembly has elected the incumbent President, Professor Walter Bauer-Wabnegg, as interim President.

Following his appointment by the Minister, he will continue to lead the University of Erfurt until a newly elected President takes office. This has now been announced by Professor Andrea Dorothea Bührmann, Chair of the University Council, who explains: “We are delighted about this – not least in view of the forthcoming and pivotal target and performance agreements with the state due to be finalised this year, which we know are in good and experienced hands with Professor Bauer-Wabnegg. I would also like to thank Professor Beate Hampe, who will once again be providing him with particular support as his deputy during the interim period.”

As, following Professor Anke Holler’s withdrawal, the selection process for the new President has not been concluded according to legal advice from the Thuringian Ministry of Education, Science and Culture, a new election is now to be held. The candidates standing for election are Professor André Brodocz, currently Vice President for Research and Academic Careers, and Professor Iris Winkler from the Friedrich Schiller University of Jena. At the time – alongside Professor Anke Holler – they had been identified by the selection committee as candidates exceptionally well-suited to the post and had introduced themselves to the university public in November 2025. The election is scheduled to take place on 2 November 2026.
