Research Group "Voluntariness": Lecture and Workshops with International Guests

The DFG Research Group "Voluntariness" and its sub-project "Voluntariness as Political Practice" at the University of Erfurt invite you to another English-language workshop on 23 and 24 June. It is entitled "Dis-Cover Fellow Citizens: Voluntary Civic Engagement in the Early Republic and Antebellum America" and guests and colleagues from the USA and Germany are expected.

They will discuss how practices of citizenship reveal the diversity of US subjects and how democracy was practiced through voluntary civic engagement and political participation from the American Revolution to the Antebellum Era. The workshop is planned as a face-to-face event and will take place at the meeting place "Kleine Synagoge" in Erfurt. Anyone who would like to attend is asked to register with Pia Herzan (email pia.herzan@uni-erfurt.de).

The research group would like to draw your attention to another event that will take place on 20 June: The researchers will welcome the historian Sandrine Kott from the University of Geneva for a lecture and a joint workshop at the Centre for Transcultural Studies / Perthes Collection in Gotha. Kott's research interests in the fields of the history of labour, the history of the welfare state in the 20th century and the history of international organisations offer numerous points of connection to the work of the research group on Voluntarism, including in different national and global contexts of labour. The evening lecture entitled "Planning and Engineering in Cold War Europe and Beyond. International Organizations at Work" begins at 6.15 pm in the rooms of the Centre for Transcultural Studies / Perthes Collection in the "Pagenhaus" at Friedenstein Castle in Gotha.

Already on the afternoon of 20 June, between 1.30 and 5 p.m., there will be a workshop with Sandrine Kott to discuss the work of the research group "Voluntariness". Guests are also cordially invited to attend. Please register by 16 June by email to Carolyn Taratko.
