One of the central aspects in the debate on genocide concerns the role of war as an important trigger of crimes against humanity (Rafter 2016, Semerdijan 2024). In the light of current military conflicts (Ukraine, Gaza) it seems timely to re-consider key points of the debates on genocide – not least with the aim to recognize the complexity of cases, their histories, causes, and manifestations, and thus help to avoid preconceived judgements.
