From 5 to 6 March 2026, Dr Gabriele Ball (University of Göttingen) and Dr Hendrikje Carius (Gotha Research Library) will host the conference „Kommunikationsräume vernetzt“ at the Gotha Research Centre of the University of Erfurt. It examines the spaces of communication and knowledge at the Gotha court under Duchess Luise Dorothea and Duke Friedrich III of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg. The focus is on the interconnections between private libraries, societies and correspondence, through which the court participated in the literary and scientific debates of the Enlightenment.

The workshop's key questions aim to reconstruct the constellation of actors surrounding the ducal couple: To what extent can cooperation between Frederick and Luise Dorothea be demonstrated in the area of cultural and scientific activities at court? Can the central position attributed to the duchess in this area be verified? What implications did her role have for the female networks at the Gotha court, which have only been studied to a limited extent so far? How did the relationship between “learned” men and women to the court's centre of power develop? The aim of the workshop is to further explore the praxeological dimension of the spaces of communication and knowledge at the Gotha court in the mid-18th century.

Please note: The conference language is the German language. Further information on the content and programme can be found in the German version of this page and in the downloads.

Two public events are also planned to accompany the conference on 5 March:
