How can examinations demonstrate skills rather than just knowledge? This workshop covers the basics of skills-based examinations and shows how learning objectives, teaching and examinations can be effectively aligned through constructive alignment. Practical examples will help participants develop suitable examination formats and marking strategies.

#AssessmentSkills

How can examinations be designed that not only test knowledge but also demonstrate actual skills? In this workshop, participants will explore contemporary approaches to examination and evaluation and develop practical examination formats for a variety of teaching and learning situations.

The focus is on the fundamentals of competence-based assessment, the principle of constructive alignment, and the development of suitable assessment tasks and formats. Participants will learn how learning objectives, teaching methods and examinations can be effectively aligned, and which examination formats are suitable for promoting and measuring different levels of competence.

In addition, common assessment errors are addressed and strategies presented to minimise them. Using concrete examples, traditional and alternative examination formats – ranging from written and oral examinations to project, portfolio or poster examinations – are discussed and further developed.

The workshop also provides practical criteria for formulating competence-oriented examination questions and demonstrates how Anderson/Krathwohl operators can be used specifically to address different levels of competence.

Workshop objectives:

  • Participants will know how to develop examinations for different examination formats.
  • They are aware of typical bias effects and can minimise them.
  • They are able to develop examination formats and tasks that follow the principle of constructive alignment.
  • They will understand why and how to assess competencies.
