Jazz behind the Iron Curtain: a concert with Conny Bauer

The seminar ‘The USA and the Cold War’ will explore the topic of jazz under state socialism during the 2026/27 winter term. 

Conny Bauer, legendary trombonist and influential luminary of GDR jazz, will be performing at the Kaufmannskirche in Erfurt alongside the young Berlin pianist Louis Rastig. Conny Bauer has a long history with Berlin’s ever-evolving improvisational scene. In a duo with Louis Rastig, this connection takes on a new, contemporary dimension. With their unrivalled sensitivity to dynamics and dramaturgy, the two musicians create soundscapes in real time which, in the spirit of Creative Music, move innovatively between the tradition of avant-garde jazz and the aesthetics of contemporary art music. The concert becomes a musical meeting place between the trombone and the piano.
