The University of Erfurt welcomes 1,026 new students for the winter semester

The University of Erfurt has started the 2026/27 winter semester with a total of 5,508 students. The number of first-year students is almost at the same level as last year.

The number of first-year students in their first university semester at the University of Erfurt – that is, those studying at a German university for the first time – stood at 1,026 as at the reference date of 30 October. Of these, 171 first-year students hold a qualification for university admission from abroad. Furthermore, 691 students commenced a Master’s degree programme in the 2026/27 winter semester.

This year, the bachelor's programmes in Special Education and Inclusive Pedagogy, International Relations and Economics, Law and Social Sciences proved particularly popular amongst first-year students, as did the master's programmes in Psychology, Global Communication and Children's and Youth Media Studies. For the first time, the University of Erfurt was also able to enrol students on the bachelor's programme in Construction Engineering, which it offers in cooperation with Erfurt University of Applied Sciences.

“We are delighted to be able to welcome so many new students to the campus once again,” says Professor Julia Knop, Vice President for Study Affairs at the University of Erfurt. “This shows that we continue to score highly with our course catalogue, good support right from the start and comparatively short duration of study. Furthermore, we are delighted that, in collaboration with the local education authorities, we have once again been able to offer 78 places for first-year students on the dual study programme for secondary school teaching – alongside our regular teacher training programme, this is a further and important contribution towards addressing the shortage of teachers in Thuringia’s secondary schools.”
