IPB stands out in the competition for "Best Research Environment 2026"

On 27 June in Berlin, the Young Academy and the Volkswagen Foundation presented the "Best Research Environment 2026" award. The award recognises innovative, supportive and creative research structures. Among the five winning teams, each of which receives prize money of 10,000 euros, is the Institute for Planetary Health Behaviour (IPB) at the University of Erfurt.

The award was presented for the second time this year. From more than 170 applications, the jury selected 15 teams from across Germany whose working and research structures impressed the panel. Simply being shortlisted is already considered an honour for research environments that are characterised by openness, transparent collaboration, creative research approaches and a supportive working culture. The five winning teams were ultimately selected by draw.

The Institute for Planetary Health Behaviour investigates how people act in ways that benefit both health and the climate, and how behaviour can be changed through communication, policy and interventions. The jury considered the combination of a clear mission, interdisciplinary research (8 professorships, 41 members) and targeted knowledge transfer to be worthy of recognition. Interdisciplinary teams, dialogue formats and international networks promote cooperation, practical relevance and the early involvement of early-stage researchers. The Advisory Board particularly commends the combination of research and practice-oriented knowledge transfer.

Professor Cornelia Betsch, Director of the IPB: “I am proud of this award – but above all that it was initiated by our early-career researchers. It shows that the IPB’s vision – research and impact as part of a vibrant society – is coming to fruition and is valued. And everyone contributes to this, every day.”
