Long-termism is the current hype ideology of Silicon Valley. Billionaires such as Elon Musk profess his ideas, philanthropic foundations spend millions on promoting longtermist ideas, and longtermist ideologemes underpin the official corporate policy of companies such as OpenAI. But the fight against the left and trade unions as well as the alliance of tech capital with the Trump administration are also justified with set pieces of longtermist thinking.
The lecture takes a social-scientific look at the ideology of longtermism. Its function in digital capitalism will be analysed. Classics of sociology will be used to explain why this ideology is developing in a fascist direction.
