The event looks from Gotha to Marbach am Neckar at Tobias Mayer (1723–1762) as a pioneer of modern cartography. In his short life, Mayer made a significant contribution to the renewal of cartography in the Age of Enlightenment. He opposed the widespread "copying" of maps and advocated a critical examination of the sources.
Armin Hüttermann's enthusiasm made it possible to create a unique museum dedicated to cartography at Mayer's birthplace in Marbach. In his lecture, Hüttermann will present Mayer's work and at the same time give an insight into the organisation of a museum dedicated to the history of cartography.
At the end of the evening, the "Friends of the Gotha Research Library" invite you to a small reception.
