Start of studies in the next winter semester? Apply now!

If you would like to start your studies at the University of Erfurt in October 2026, i.e. in the winter semester, you should get started now: Applications for all Bachelor's programmes and the Master's programme in Theology open on 1 May. The application period ends on 15 September – with the exception of programmes with restricted admission (NC) . The application deadline for these is 15 July. Anyone interested in a Master's degree at the University of Erfurt can also apply – here too, the deadline is 15 July. Applications for teacher training programmes (Master of Education) are also already possible and are recommended for the coming winter semester between 1 May and 15 July.

The course catalogue is extremely diverse: If you want to become a teacher at primary schools, secondary schools or special needs schools, this is the place for you. But Erfurt's communication studies are also known far beyond the borders of the Free State – whether through the Master's in Health Communication, Global Communication or Children's and Youth Media Studies. Would you like to study in the rooms where Martin Luther once studied the liberal arts? The Faculty of Catholic Theology, based in the cathedral, is the only one of its kind in the eastern German states. Students here breathe history and at the same time explore modern questions of theology and society. Political science in Erfurt is also something special: the focus here is on linking different disciplines (Economics, Law and Social Sciences, and a Social Science concentration). The interdisciplinary nature of the programme, i.e. the “interlocking” of the disciplines, provides an excellent foundation for later specialisation.

For those who want to look beyond the boundaries of their own subject, the "Studium Fundamentale" programme offers new perspectives: This component of the Bachelor's programme enables students to acquire a wide range of methodological knowledge and key skills in interdisciplinary courses and to gain career-oriented practical experience. In addition, a mentoring system guarantees personal support for students from the first semester onwards by a professor. Another exciting aspect of the Bachelor's programme in Erfurt is the “two-subject Bachelor's degree”. This means that the programme consists of two subjects, namely a major and a minor. This gives graduates a broad foundation for their subsequent career path.

For all those who are still looking for guidance in the “study jungle”, the university has developed the online tool STUDIMAT for choosing a Bachelor's programme (in German only). Not only can you use it to find suitable combinations for your major and minor subjects, STUDIMAT also provides all the important information about your chosen programme as well as testimonials from current students and former students, alumni.

And if you'd rather see for yourself, just come to our Open Day on 9 May or the Discovery Days from 22 to 26 June.

University of Erfurt

Since its foundation in 1994, the University of Erfurt has firmly established itself in the national and international higher education landscape with an explicit cultural and social science profile. With its focus on religion, humanities and cultural studies, society and teacher training, it is a centrally located educational and research institution with around 5,600 students, around 100 professorships, 400 academic staff and 300 administrative employees. As a reform university with an attractive and sometimes unusual teaching and research profile, the University of Erfurt, which is certified as "family-friendly", focuses on interdisciplinarity and addresses the major social challenges of our time. It is committed to international academic co-operation with a view to global participation in knowledge and science. On its campus close to the city centre in the state capital, the University of Erfurt facilitates direct communication thanks to its short distances and promotes intensive study and interdisciplinary research. It is also a role model for other universities with its mentoring system, the "Studium Fundamentale" programme and career guidance.
