In his research, he has, in constant engagement with the work and research programme of Max Weber, dealt in particular with the dynamics and consequences of the post-communist transformation. He analysed comparative sociological questions, also with a view to Russia, which he knew very well through various research stays.
He left his mark on the Berlin Journal, of which he was the founding editor, for the entire thirty-five years of its existence. In the week before his death, he took part in several meetings and contributed his perspective with his characteristic combination of acumen, dedication and great empathy.
"We got to know and appreciate Frank Ettrich as a warm, always straightforward colleague and friend who was passionately focused on the matter at hand. His death leaves a huge gap – especially in our editorial team at the Berliner Journal. We will honour his memory. Our thoughts are with his family," said Hartmut Rosa, Director of the Max-Weber-Kolleg and Editor-in-Chief of the Berlin Journal of Sociology.
