Gerda Henkel Fellowships announced for research tandems on the global history of ideas

This year, the Gotha Research Centre at the University of Erfurt is once again offering scholarships for multidisciplinary research tandems that are intended to meet the special challenge of transnational and, above all, transcultural connections between bodies of knowledge. The deadline for applications is 31 July 2024, 11.59 pm.

Two researchers whose expertise complements each other in terms of a research question are invited to apply with a joint exposé. The work (for three to six months) with the sources preserved in Gotha should serve as the basis for a joint publication or a further application. The scholarship amounts to 2300 euros per month. In addition, grants for publication costs are possible. A family allowance of 400 euros can also be granted if the applicants are raising underage children.

The renowned Arabist, translator and musician Dr Claudia Ott and the Egyptian historian and manuscript expert Professor Amr Abdel Aziz Mounir will form the first research tandem in the Gerda Henkel Fellowship Programme for Global History of Ideas from July 2024. In their joint project, they want to make the Gotha Hakim manuscript relating to al-Ḥākim bi-Amrillāh (985–1021), the Fatimid caliph of Cairo, accessible to scholars for the first time.

Further information on the scholarships can be found on the Gotha Research Centre website. There you will also find important information on the application process.
