Gotha Research Centre starts the 2024 summer semester with a new programme

The Gotha Research Centre at the University of Erfurt is starting the 2024 summer semester with a new programme.

In addition to the celebrations to mark the 20th anniversary of the research centre and "20 years of Duke Ernst Scholarships", the programme also includes a colloquium to mark the 400th anniversary of the birth of Hiob Ludolf. Under the direction of Professor Martin Mulsow, Director of the Gotha Research Centre, lectures by Dr Asaph Ben-Tov (Hanover, NH), PD Dr Susanne Friedrich (Munich) and Professor Wolbert G.C. Smidt (Mekelle) are planned for 15 June at the research centre on "Schlossberg", where the home of the polymath and Ethiopian scholar Hiob Ludolf (1624–1704) once stood.

The highlight of the summer semester will be the Early Modern Day of the "Early Modern Times" working group in the Association of German Historians from 19 to 21 September. The conference theme "WissensWelten" (Worlds of Knowledge) focuses on different cultures, milieus and forms of knowledge on the one hand, and on the global character of the history of knowledge on the other. Scholars from Germany and abroad will present and discuss current research topics. The historian Professor Sanjay Subrahmanyam (Los Angeles) will be the keynote speaker.

Other guest lectures are also on the programme for the summer semester – for example by German Studies Professor Dirk Niefanger (Erlangen-Nuremberg), who will focus on the author's openness to different social milieus, gender formations, ethnicities and religions with "Lessing divers" on 25 April, or ancient historian Professor Mischa Meier (Tübingen), who will talk about "Attila in Venice: The Emergence of a City and its 'History'" on 11 June.

Details of the programme can be found on the Gotha Research Centre website.
