Lecture by Professor Gisa Stich (iba | Internationale Berufsakademie) as part of the joint public lecture series ‘War and Peace’ organised by the City of Erfurt and Erfurt’s universities during the 2026/27 winter semester.

Wherever people live together, there are conflicts – particularly within families, where closeness, differing needs and expectations come into play. But is conflict really the opposite of peace? Or do we need conflict to shape relationships, negotiate boundaries and enable change?

This talk explores why arguments are a natural part of family life, what children and adults learn from dealing with conflict, and how disputes can be resolved without damaging relationships. It examines the potential of non-violent communication, but also its limitations, particularly when power dynamics, fundamental values or social tensions come into play.

Finally, from the perspective of social work, the question arises as to what we can learn from dealing with conflicts within families to foster peaceful coexistence in society.

The speaker:
Professor Gisa Stich is a Professor of Social Work at the iba | Internationale Berufsakademie, as well as an adjunct lecturer at Otto Friedrich University in Bamberg. As a qualified educator and systemic coach, she combines academic expertise with many years’ experience in research, teaching and (social) educational practice.

Her work and research foci in particular lie in the areas of educational biographies, gender equality, social participation, as well as career guidance and transitions within the education system. In this context, she examines how individual development opportunities are influenced by societal and institutional frameworks.

She is particularly committed to linking academic findings with practice, as well as to promoting equal opportunities, diversity and social participation.

Admission to the lectures in this lecture series is free. However, please note that seating in the Town Hall Ballroom is limited to 180 places.

Ringvorlesung im Wintersemester 2026/27

In collaboration with the City, Erfurt’s universities are once again organising a joint public lecture series for the 2026/27 winter semester, thereby literally bringing the university into the city. The series will focus on socially relevant topics, which will be examined from the perspective of various academic disciplines and subsequently discussed – this time on the theme of “War and Peace”.
