Lecture by Adjunct Professor Dr Ulrich Franke (University of Erfurt) as part of the joint public lecture series ‘War and Peace’ organised by the City of Erfurt and Erfurt’s universities during the 2026/27 winter term.

It will soon be five years since the start of the second phase of Russian aggression against Ukraine in February 2022. Meanwhile, opinions within German society remain widely divided on three questions: What led to this war in Eastern Europe? How, in particular, should European governments respond to this war? And under what conditions could this war be brought to an end? The lecture by Adjunct Professor Dr Ulrich Franke aims to convey the significance of the war between Russia and Ukraine for peace and freedom in Europe. Against this backdrop, he examines some particularly worrying views on the three questions mentioned above that have emerged in the German debate over recent years.

Admission to the lectures in this lecture series is free. However, please note that the number of seats in the Town Hall Ballroom is limited to 180.

Lecture series in the winter term 2026/27

In collaboration with the city, Erfurt’s universities are once again organising a joint public lecture series for the 2026/27 winter semester, thereby literally bringing the university ‘into the city’. The focus will be on socially relevant topics, which will be examined from the perspective of various academic disciplines and then discussed – this time on the theme of ‘War and Peace’.
