Keeping spaces for discourse open at universities

How can universities remain places of open academic exchange? In light of increasing attacks on academic freedom and university autonomy, the University of Erfurt is hosting a public discussion event on Monday, 2 June 2026 entitled "(Diskurs)Räume an der Universität offenhalten". The event will take place from 2 to 4 pm in lecture hall 4 at the University of Erfurt and is part of the nationwide "Wissenschaft gegen Faschismus" (Science against Fascism) week of action.

The panel discussion will focus on the question of how discourse spaces at universities in Erfurt can be organised in an open, plural and democratic way and defended against political or social restrictions. Perspectives from different disciplines and status groups will be brought together and discussed together with the audience.

Participating in the discussion will be:

  • Professor André Brodocz, Professor of Political Theory and Vice President for Research and Academic Career;
  • a representative of the "Studis gegen Rechts Erfurt" group;
  • Professor Sophia Hoffmann, Professor of International Relations and Conflict Research at the University of Erfurt;
  • Professor Patrick Becker, Professor of Catholic Theology at the University of Erfurt;
  • Professor Kerstin Wydra, climate scientist at the University of Applied Sciences Erfurt.

Dr Ilyas Saliba, research employee at the Professorship for International Politics and Conflict Research, will moderate the event. Short opening statements by the panellists are planned, followed by a joint discussion round and the opening of the discussion to questions and contributions from the audience.

Nationwide campaign "Wissenschaft gegen Faschismus" (Science against Fascism)

The "Science against Fascism" action week is a nationwide initiative involving well over 500 academics, students and civil society organisations. The aim of the initiative is to draw attention to threats to academic freedom, democratic debate culture and the autonomy of universities. "Science has a social responsibility" under this guiding principle, the campaign aims to emphasise the importance of scientific expertise for analysing current social and political developments. At the same time, the role of universities in the defence of democratic values and a pluralistic culture of debate is to be strengthened. From 1 to 7 June, events will be held at universities and research institutions across Germany.

The campaign was initiated by "Studis gegen Rechts" (Students against the Right) together with a circle of supporters consisting of professors. The University of Erfurt is also taking part in the week of action, sending out a signal for democratic values, academic freedom and social dialogue.
