Lecture on "NVA Officers in a Unified Germany"

The research network "Dictatorship Experience and Transformation" (Diktaturerfahrung und Transformation, DuT) invites you to another digital event as part of its colloquium in the summer semester 2022 at the University of Erfurt on 5 May. PD Dr Nina Leonhard (Centre for Military History and Social Sciences of the German Armed Forces, Potsdam) will speak from 4 p.m. on "NVA-Offiziere im vereinigten Deutschland. Herausforderungen der (berufs-)biografischen Vergangenheitsverarbeitung im Kontext eines Systemwechsels".

Based on the results of a qualitative study, the lecture will discuss the career paths and experiences of former officers of the National People's Army of the GDR after unification. In doing so, both the central parameters of the Bundeswehr's "integration policy" and typical processing patterns on the part of the soldiers concerned will be highlighted. The aim is to shed light on the challenges of social integration of former GDR officers in the context of the system change of 1989/90.

The speaker, Nina Leonhard, studied political science at the Free University of Berlin and at the Institut d'Etudes Politiques de Paris and received her doctorate with a thesis on the change in memory of the National Socialist era over the course of three generations. She worked at the Social Science Institute and the German Armed Forces Command and Staff College in Strausberg and Hamburg. In 2016, she was awarded her habilitation in sociology with a thesis on the social integration of NVA officers in reunified Germany. Since 2016, she has headed a project area in the research field of military sociology at the Centre for Military History and Social Sciences of the Bundeswehr in Potsdam.

The colloquium will take place digitally via the Cisco Webex platform (meeting room: https://uni-erfurt.webex.com/meet/DuT_UE). No separate registration is necessary, you can join the meeting directly via your browser.
