Workshop opens up sources on military affairs in the Duchy of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg

"Military in Gotha: Sources and Perspectives" is the title of a digital workshop at the Gotha Research Centre at the University of Erfurt, which will open up sources on military affairs in the Duchy of Saxony-Gotha-Altenburg on 10 December.

Until now, military affairs in the duchy have hardly played a role in research - unjustifiably, as the workshop will show: Firstly, this medium-sized territory had a similar degree of militarisation during the 17th and 18th centuries, around 1700 even higher than Brandenburg-Prussia, which has been well studied in terms of (military) history. Secondly, from the 1680s onwards, Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg was a similarly important partner for subsidy business as Hesse-Kassel, which was known for its soldier trade. The workshop will examine the military system of the duchy in various facets and present the rich source corpus. Presenters will be Marian Hefter (Gotha), Holger Kürbis (Gotha), Erik Liebscher (Gotha), Markus Meumann (Gotha), Martin Mulsow (Erfurt/Gotha), Anne-Simone Rous (Dresden), Michael Schwarz (Erfurt) and Andrea Thiele (Halle).
