Lecture by Professor Dr. phil. Sascha Bachmann (IU – International University) as part of the joint public lecture series ‘War and Peace’ organised by the City of Erfurt and Erfurt’s universities during the winter semester 2026/27.

Conflicts in couple relationships are often experienced not as objective disagreements, but as a threat to or a breach of emotional security. This is linked to escalating interaction dynamics, which are examined from the perspective of attachment theory and using concepts from emotion-focused couple therapy (EFT). The lecture by Professor Dr. phil. Sascha Bachmann from the International University (IU) demonstrates how protective and emotion-regulation strategies, as well as insecure attachment, interactively contribute to maintain and reinforce negative dynamics in couple conflicts – and under what conditions emotional security is possible in such conflicts.

The speaker:
Sascha Bachmann is Professor of Social Work at the IU – International University of Applied Sciences in Erfurt. His research focuses on psychosocial and therapeutic work, reconstructive and clinical social work, and methods of qualitative social research. Bachmann studied sociology, Philosophy and cultural studies at Friedrich Schiller University in Jena, where he was awarded a PhD for a study on the phenomenon of social dropout from the perspective of civilisation theory. He subsequently worked in research and teaching at Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin, as well as at the Universities of Hagen and Jena. Later, Bachmann worked in Berlin in the fields of systemic therapy (DGSF), emotion-focused therapy (ICEEFT) and clinical ethics counselling (Charité). This combines a scientific foundation and reconstructive methodology with expertise in depth psychology-based approaches to educational and family counselling, as well as in trauma-sensitive work with victims of crime. Alongside his academic duties, Sascha Bachmann works as a therapist and counsellor.

Admission to the lectures in this lecture series is free. However, please note that seating in the Town Hall Ballroom is limited to 180 places.

Lecture series in the winter term 2026/27

In collaboration with the city, Erfurt’s universities are once again organising a joint public lecture series during the 2026/27 winter semester, thereby literally bringing the university ‘into the city’. The focus will be on socially relevant topics, which will be examined from the perspective of various academic disciplines and then discussed – this time on the theme of ‘War and Peace’.
