Panel discussion of the doctoral programme De-Globalisation and Global Decoupling (DeGlobE)

The centre of attention is the question of how current developments – ranging from geopolitical tensions to the restructuring of global supply chains – should be understood: as processes of deglobalisation or as a fundamental transformation of the global economy.

The event is open to the public; admission is free and no registration is required.

Panel:

  • Professor Stefan Schmalz (Professorship of Labour and Economic Sociology, Friedrich Schiller University Jena)
  • Melanie Vogelbach (Head of International Economic Policy, German Chamber of Industry and Commerce)
  • Dr Melanie Müller (Africa and Middle East Research Group, German Institute for International and Security Affairs)
  • Dr Beate Scheidt (Political Secretary of the IG Metall Executive Board)

Information from the organisers

With this public event the doctoral program “De-globalization and Global Decoupling (DeGlobE)” will launch its academic activities.

The team invite you to join the panel discussion titled: “De-globalization and Global Decoupling. A Recalibration of Market and State?”

Current developments in the global economy raise fundamental questions:

Trade policy is increasingly shaped by security concerns, industrial policy is experiencing a resurgence, and global supply chains are being reassessed in terms of resilience and strategic dependencies.
Against this backdrop, we ask:
How can we best understand these transformations?
Are we witnessing processes of de-globalization—or rather a profound reorganization of global markets under new political conditions?

The event will begin with a keynote by Stefan Schmalz, who will provide a sociological perspective on current developments, with a particular focus on global power shifts and the role of China.
