Letters from emigrants are digitalized

The digitization of the so-called Alte Sammlung der Deutschen Auswandererbriefsammlung (DABS), which is kept in the Gotha Research Library of the University of Erfurt, has now been started with financial support from the Rhineland-Palatinate Research Fund.

The third-party funded project is based on a research initiative of Professor Dr. Ursula Lehmkuhl (University of Trier). The transatlantic correspondence of about 7,000 letters and related contextual materials and transcriptions will be digitized in about 122,000 recordings. This will facilitate scholarly work on the life, hardships and changes in the course of emigration from Germany to the USA in the period from 1830 to 1930.
