Diversity as an opportunity: University of Erfurt continues with action plan

Diversity is an integral part of the University of Erfurt's profile – because we see diversity as an opportunity. We can benefit together from an open and constructive approach to diversity, individuality and plurality. With this in mind, the University of Erfurt has now updated its existing action plan to implement the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

"Diversity and inclusion are important to us," explains Christian Tischmeyer, Diversity Officer at the University of Erfurt. A lot has been done and achieved in recent years – in addition to structural measures for barrier-free accessibility, for example, improving the infrastructure of teaching and event rooms by equipping them with hearing loops and room microphones. In addition, the university has developed a new guidance and orientation system with external support, which is now gradually being rolled out on campus and is not only generally barrier-free but also tactile in some areas.

In the updated version of the action plan that has now been published, the focus is particularly on a diversity-sensitive institutional university culture. "Above all, this means raising awareness of diversity and inclusion," says Tischmeyer. "Among other things, the 'Dies academicus', which we will be holding on campus next year on 3 June, is intended to contribute to this – a day on which we will specifically address the topic of neurodiversity for the first time and everything it means for teaching and, above all, the community on campus." In addition, a guide for lecturers is planned to sensitise them to the needs of students with disabilities and present examples of best practice.

Details can be found in our action plan (in German only).
