Course Details
The Master's program in Philosophy (Language – Knowledge – Action) enables an in-depth study of the systematic and historical aspects of philosophy. It serves the development of conceptual-argumentative and reflexive skills and promotes the ability to critique and judge normative questions.
The content of the course includes problems and questions from the central philosophical disciplines:
- history of philosophy
- philosophy of language
- epistemology
- logic
- philosophy of science
- ethics
- political philosophy
- action theory
- philosophy of culture
- philosophical anthropology and
- aesthetics

Philosophy in Detail
Structure of the study programme
The programme is divided into a study phase of three semesters and a fourth semester in which the Master's thesis is written.
The following six modules are offered in the study phase:
- Language and Logic
- Mind and action
- Knowledge and world
- Man and culture
- Morals and politics
- History of philosophy
Examination regulations
Study abroad
A semester abroad in an English-speaking country is strongly recommended. The International Office will be happy to assist you in organizing your stay abroad.
Admissions qualification
- above-average degree from a Bachelor's programme (grade 2.3 or better) or a comparable university degree
The Master's programme is not only open to graduates of a philosophy programme, but to all those interested in the subject of philosophy. Applicants without any previous knowledge of philosophy must acquire the necessary subject-specific basics (propaedeutics) during the course of their studies.
Language requirements
- German: Upon application, international applicants must prove German language skills at level B1.
- A good knowledge of English is generally a prerequisite for studies. Knowledge of the classical languages of occidental philosophy, Greek and Latin, is an advantage. Proof of language skills is not required.
Language Center
The Language Centre (Sprachenzentrum) offers around 140 language courses per semester in 16 modern and ancient (foreign) languages. It supports you in acquiring and deepening your language skills.

International applicants whose native language is not German must provide proof of sufficient German language skills (level B1) upon application.
